Dear Reader,

The Catalyst Perspective

Let me ask you something.

When you look at 2025, what did you actually learn? Not what you managed. Not what you delivered.

What did you learn?

If you're struggling to answer that question, you're not alone. And you're not failing.

You're looping.

Last week, I was coaching a municipal director who's been in her role for three years.

Smart.
Capable.
Respected by her team.
And exhausted.

She told me, "I feel like I'm running hard, but I'm not actually going anywhere."

That's when I asked her: "What's different about how you lead now compared to a year ago?"

Long pause.

Then: "Honestly? Nothing. I'm just better at what I was already doing."

That's the loop.

You're not stuck because you're incompetent. You're stuck because you're competent at the same things you were competent at last year.

And if you're honest with yourself, you already know where you're looping.

It's the same problem you keep solving. The same conflict you keep managing. The same conversation you keep having.

You're refining. You're optimizing. You're getting faster.

But you're not growing.

And here's what nobody tells you: loops feel productive.

You're busy.
Your calendar is full.
You're solving problems.
You're getting results.
But busy isn't the same as better.

So let's be direct: Are you leveling up this year, or are you just looping at a higher altitude?

The Power Move: Strategy & Perspective

Leveling up requires one shift: you have to do something you don't already know how to do.

Not better. Differently.

The SCALE™ Framework shows you how:

S – Strengths-Based Leadership Stop fixing weaknesses. Start building new strengths. Growth doesn't come from shoring up what's broken; it comes from expanding what's possible.

C – Confidence & Cognitive Reframing Ask yourself: "Am I repeating this pattern because it works, or because it's familiar?" Comfort is the enemy of capacity.

A – Aligned Values & Boundary Negotiation Loops happen when you say yes to everything. Boundaries aren't restrictions; they're the infrastructure that makes growth possible.

L – Leadership Longevity You can't level up while running on fumes. Rest isn't a reward for finishing the loop. It's the requirement for breaking it.

E – Ecosystem Building Who's holding you accountable to grow, not just perform? If no one is challenging you, you're managing yourself into a loop.

Leveling up doesn't happen by accident. It happens when you decide that what you're doing—no matter how well you're doing it—isn't enough.

The Leadership Catalyst Spark

3 Signs You're Looping (Not Leveling)

1. You Default to What's Familiar: When pressure hits, you reach for the same strategies. Even when they produce diminishing returns, you stick with what you know because it's predictable.

2. You Can't Name What You've Learned: If someone asks what you've learned this quarter, you struggle to answer. You've refined existing skills, but you haven't expanded your leadership capacity.

3. You're Solving the Same Problems on Repeat: The issues keep showing up. Different faces, same dynamics. You're not incompetent—you're just using the same tools on problems that require new thinking.

Ally in Action: A Note for Men on This List

Here's your question for January:

Are you creating environments where your team can level up, or are you rewarding loops?

If you only recognize people for executing what they already know how to do, you're not building capacity. You're building dependency.

Make space for your team to try new approaches, even when the old ones work.

Leadership development isn't a perk. It's infrastructure.

Take Action Today

Pick one:

Name Your Loop: Write down one recurring problem you keep solving the same way. Be specific.

Ask the Growth Question: "What would I need to learn or develop to handle this differently—not better, but differently?"

Share This Issue: Forward this to one colleague who's working hard but might be stuck in a loop.

Catalyst Power Retainer™ Opens for Q1 2026

If you're serious about breaking the loop and building new leadership capacity, I'm taking four (4) clients for Q1.

This isn't a course. This isn't a webinar. This is confidential, customized strategy support built around your schedule and your specific challenges.

You don't need more inspiration. You need someone who's lived this work and can see what you can't see.

Four seats. Q1 enrollment. Limited availability.

Final Words

Here's the truth you need to hear: What you're not changing, you're choosing.

If you're in the same loop you were in last January, that's not bad luck.
That's not circumstance.
That's a choice.

Maybe you didn't know it was a choice. But now you do.

Every time you level up, you become a different version of yourself. That's uncomfortable. It's supposed to be.

Because the version of you that got you here can't get you there.

So the question isn't whether you're capable of leveling up. You are.

The question is: who's going to hold you accountable to do it?

If the answer is "no one," you already know what happens next.

Same loop. Different year.

Choose differently.
